Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences with Technology

Narrative

Below are creative artifacts from a lesson I gave in my student observation in the fall of 2020. I was observing in a 5th-grade classroom at Brooklands Elementary School. These artifacts are for a Reading Workshop lesson which was taught face-to-face. In this lesson, I used Google Docs and shared the sticky notes chart on the smartboard. I also used clip art and various Google Docs functions to create my chart. This display was used to guide my discussion with the students about orienting ourselves to complex texts. The chart was then used as an anchor chart for the students in their guided practice. The students marked the places in their book where there was something they didn't quite understand, asking the questions posted on the anchor chart.

Reflection

The digital tools I used for this lesson were effective in helping students meet the learning targets for the lesson; they also served as a guide for their comprehension. There was a lively discussion with many intelligent observations and suggestions from students. I was able to leverage technology to engage students in an important reading concept that they will use across content areas. By presenting them with the tools to study a complex text and asking for their thoughts, I was able to involve them in the classroom community.
