STUDENT WORK SAMPLES
This is a letter written to school officials on the debatable issue of whether or not to have chocolate milk in schools. Students took a stance on the issue and developed a claim, supports, and evidence. They also included a counterclaim and rebuttal. The students went through a writing process to develop these essays which included researching, developing a writing plan, drafting, revising, and editing. They then debated the issue and presented their essay to the class. ----->

These are literary essays written by my 5th-grade students. Through the progression of eight lessons, the students were taught the meaning, placement, and usage of theses, supports, and evidence through teacher modeling, anchor charts, and guided practice, including writing exercises and individual conferencing. Instruction was adjusted according to formative assessment results throughout the unit. The students were asked to write a literary essay based on one of two short stories: Eleven, by Sandra Cisneros, and Shells, by Cynthia Rylant. The essay writing process included a writing plan, draft, and final publication.
